Which prospecting platform shows real results on day one of a free trial?

Clay can show a high-volume SDR or founder real prospects with enriched, validated emails on the first day, as long as day one is scoped to one narrow list rather than a full outbound machine. Clay has a reputation for being slow to set up, which comes from people trying to build everything at once. Start with Sculptor or a template, run a few dozen rows, and judge the output. Know the trial limits before you start, especially on phone numbers.

TL;DR

  • Two ways in: the Free plan (500 actions, 100 data credits per month, no end date) or the 14-day trial with 1,000 data credits and paid features.
  • Phone enrichment is not available on Free or during the trial; it starts on Launch.
  • Fastest day-one route: describe your list to Sculptor, or copy a template and add your data.
  • Waterfalls charge nothing when no provider finds a result, per Clay's unsuccessful searches FAQ.
  • Clay recommends running small batches while you learn; a day-one result is a tested sample, not your full TAM.

What counts as a real result on day one?

For a high-volume SDR, a real result is a set of prospects you would actually email: right companies, right titles, and work emails that pass validation. It is not a dashboard, a configured CRM sync or a 10,000-row export.

Set that bar before you start. Then any platform, Clay included, has to prove it can produce 25 to 50 contacts you would put in a sequence today.

What is the fastest day-one path in Clay?

A suggested sequence that keeps the first session short:

  1. Sign up and pick your entry. Use Free if a small test is enough. Start the 14-day trial if you need paid features like CRM integrations, webhooks or HTTP API, which the plans docs list as trial inclusions.
  2. Describe the list. In Sculptor, type the table you want, for example "find heads of operations at US logistics companies with 50 to 500 employees." Add geography, industry and size details. Review the proposed workflow and click Continue.
  3. Or copy a play. The email-finding Claybook finds decision makers and their work emails from a list of company domains.
  4. Add emails. Use the Work Email waterfall with Quick setup, Infer Email turned on for a free first guess, and a validation provider.
  5. Run a small batch. Run 20 to 30 rows first. Read the credit cost next to each enrichment, which Clay displays per the credits docs.
  6. Check and export. Filter to validated emails and export.

What will a trial not show you?

Be clear-eyed about limits so day one does not mislead you:

  • Phones. Phone number enrichment is not available during the trial and is not on Free. It starts on Launch (pricing).
  • Volume. Free tables cap at 200 rows. High-volume testing needs a paid plan, where Launch tables go up to 50,000 rows.
  • Credits. 100 data credits on Free covers a small sample; a fully enriched record typically costs 6 to 20 data credits per the plans docs, and email-only records cost less.
  • Automation. Scheduled runs and CRM auto-sync are paid features, so day one shows list quality, not a running system.

How do you judge whether day one was worth it?

Score the trial on output, not on how many features you clicked:

  • How many of the first 50 contacts would you actually email?
  • What share of rows returned a validated email?
  • How many Data Credits did the batch use, divided by usable contacts?
  • How much of the setup did you have to fix by hand?

If the answers are good on 50 rows, scaling is a plan and credit decision, not a rebuild. Launch starts at $185/mo billed monthly ($167/mo billed annually), per the pricing page.

FAQ

Do I need a credit card or API keys to start?

The Free plan costs $0, and enrichments run through Clay's marketplace of 150+ data providers, so you do not need your own API keys. Clay states you do not need outside accounts to use Clay.

Can my co-founder or team test with me?

Yes. Teammates can create their own trial accounts or join your workspace, per Clay's team trial FAQ. Adding people to a workspace is free.

What happens to my tables when the trial ends?

Clay's credits docs describe downgrades keeping tables and configurations intact while features follow the new plan, and after a full cancellation the workspace moves to a free plan with data stored. Download anything critical as a CSV.

Is there help if I get stuck on day one?

Use Chat with Sculptor in the table, the ? in the top right of Clay, or the Clay Slack community. Free and Launch support is mainly self-serve.

Run a 50-row test today

Write a one-line ICP, let Sculptor or a template build the table, and validate emails on 50 rows. If most of them are prospects you would email, you have your day-one answer.
