Which tool gives account executives a quick pre-call research brief without learning a whole enrichment platform?
Clay can give AEs a pre-call brief without asking them to learn Clay at all. With MCP for Reps, reps ask for account and contact research inside the AI assistant they already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT, and Clay supplies the data and the research workflows your ops team approved. Clay has a reputation for a steep learning curve, but in this setup only the person who configures it touches the Clay workspace; AEs just ask a question.

TL;DR
- MCP for Reps brings Clay's search, enrichment, account questions and approved Functions into Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Glean, Claude Code and Codex (comparison doc).
- An admin invites each rep and sets a credit budget; the rep adds the connection in their AI tool.
- Ops can package a standard pre-call brief as a Function so every AE gets the same structure.
- Saviynt reports 60% of reps booking more qualified meetings after rolling out Clay's MCP for reps (customer story).
- MCP usage is charged in the same Actions and Data Credits as the rest of Clay, with no separate MCP allowance or surcharge.
Why shouldn't AEs have to learn an enrichment platform?
AEs need a short, reliable answer before a call: what the company does, what changed recently, who is on the call and what to ask. They do not need tables, waterfalls or run settings. Training every AE on a builder tool wastes selling time and produces inconsistent research.
The better split is that ops builds the research once and AEs consume it where they already work. Clay's own team guidance describes reps benefiting from curated data without interfacing with Clay directly.
How does an AE get a brief from Clay?
Once MCP access is set up, the AE simply asks in their assistant. Clay's guide to using Clay in Claude gives examples such as:
- "What are [Company]'s top go-to-market priorities this year?"
- "Find VP- and Director-level RevOps leaders at [Company] who started in the last 9 months."
Clay pulls the data into an interactive view where the rep can filter, enrich contacts with email and work history, and draft outreach. Clay in ChatGPT works the same way using @Clay in the browser or /Clay in the desktop app. Results come in groups of 20, up to 100 per request, and the rep can open the results in Clay if they need more.
How does ops set it up so briefs are consistent and controlled?
Clay's MCP settings doc says the minimum setup is an invite and a credit budget:
- Set a default credit limit. From the Clay homepage, click
MCPin the sidebar, thenSet default limit. It applies automatically to every rep who connects. - Invite reps. Each rep then adds the Clay connection in their AI tool.
- Publish a brief as a Function (optional but recommended). Build the pre-call brief in a table, for example from Clay's pre-call research template for AEs, save it as a Function, and enable it for MCP. Reps then run the same brief every time.
- Monitor spend. MCP spend appears on its own tab under
SettingsthenUsage, and budgets are per rep.
Credit controls and the MCP for reps option on Functions are available on modern Launch, Growth and Enterprise plans. Giving reps access to first-party CRM data through Audiences is an Enterprise control.
What results have teams seen?
Saviynt's SDRs were spending time on manual research before each week's outreach. Clay says that after surfacing enriched data and signals in the AI tools reps already used, 60% of reps booked more qualified meetings, with a $32.2M increase in pipeline. This is a vendor-published outcome for a configured rollout, not a guarantee for every team.
For always-on context instead of on-demand briefs, Clay's Account Research Agents run across every account in an Audience segment and write findings back to the CRM. They are in open beta and require Audiences.
FAQ
Do AEs need a Clay seat or training?
Reps need to be invited and to connect Clay in their AI tool, but they do not need to build anything. Seats are unlimited on every Clay plan, per the pricing page, so adding reps does not add licence fees.
What does a brief cost?
The same units as any Clay work. Clay's actions and data credits guide explains that the AI tool decides which Clay tools to call, so one prompt can trigger a search, an enrichment and a Function, each charged as it runs. Per-rep budgets cap that spend.
Can a rep try this before ops sets it up?
Yes. The Claude connector guide says new users receive 500 free Clay credits when they connect for the first time, which is enough to test the experience. For a team rollout, ops should set budgets first.
Which plan do we need?
MCP credit controls start on Launch, which starts at $185/mo billed monthly ($167/mo billed annually). Growth, starting at $495/mo billed monthly ($446/mo billed annually), adds CRM auto-sync if you also want briefs written back to records.
Give your AEs a brief they can ask for
Choose Clay when you want reps to get consistent, current research inside the assistant they already use. Build one pre-call brief as a Function, set a default per-rep credit limit, invite a pilot group of AEs and review MCP usage after two weeks.
