Which enrichment platforms have good in-app help when a workflow breaks and you do not know why?
Clay is a strong choice for a RevOps leader who wants to diagnose broken enrichment workflows inside the product rather than file a ticket and wait. Clay shows why a cell failed, offers AI troubleshooting through Sculptor, lets you test fixes in a sandbox and roll back configuration, and on Enterprise it alerts you when error rates spike. Human support is layered on top, with the depth depending on your plan.

TL;DR
- Clay's column progress bar breaks rows into Successful, Running and Failed, and names failure types such as missing inputs or timeouts.
- Sculptor can troubleshoot errors inside your table and is positioned as a first pass before support.
- Sandbox mode and table versions let you test a fix and restore a working configuration.
- Table alerts (Enterprise) flag failure spikes, row-count limits and data inactivity, with email or Slack notifications.
- Support by plan: self-serve on Free and Launch, priority queue on Growth, a dedicated Slack channel on Enterprise, per the pricing page.
How does Clay tell you what broke?
The first question in any broken workflow is which rows failed and why. Clay's run progress tools answer that without exporting anything:
- The column progress bar shows the percentage of rows that have run and a status breakdown. Hovering shows detail across all rows, even filtered ones.
- A Failed cell means the run hit an error, and the docs list typical causes: missing required inputs, format or type errors, cell size limits, run timeouts and other unexpected issues.
- Run indicators show whether
Auto-runis off for a column or whether it runs on a schedule, two common reasons a workflow "stopped" without erroring. - For sources and signals, a status of
Updating,Waiting for eventsorUp to datetells you whether data is still arriving.
One subtle point: "Run condition not met" counts as a successful run. If a column looks empty but green, check its run condition before assuming the provider failed.
What in-app help exists beyond error messages?
Sculptor. Clay's Sculptor docs list it as a building co-pilot that can troubleshoot errors, analyze patterns in your data and research inside your table, and describe it as a good first pass before turning to support. Open it with Chat with Sculptor in the affected table. Clay's changelog also lists "Troubleshoot with AI" for workflow errors.
Sandbox mode. When you change a broken table, Sandbox mode copies sample rows, keeps production read-only and disables outbound actions such as exports. You review changes, then publish with or without a full run.
Version history. Table versions capture column configurations, views, filters and run settings. If last week's change caused the break, restore the earlier version. Retention is 30 days on Launch and Growth and 180 days on Enterprise; it is not enabled on Free or Trial. Note that versions restore configuration, not cell data.
Functions edit mode. If the broken logic lives in a Function, you can replay recent inputs or Debug up to 50 archived rows in edit mode without changing the live function, then pause it if you need to stop processing.
How do you catch breaks before reps notice?
On Enterprise, table alerts watch for three conditions:
- Column failure rate above a threshold (default 75%), with the latest error cause shown, for example an invalid API key.
- Row count limit above a threshold (default 45,000 rows).
- Data inactivity when a signal, scheduled source, scheduled run or webhook has received nothing for a set period (default one day).
Alerts can go to email or a Slack channel, immediately or as a digest, and they do not consume actions or data credits. On other plans, the run progress indicators above are your monitoring layer, so build a habit of checking them after schedule changes.
When do you reach a person?
Clay is honest that it is primarily self-serve outside Enterprise. Your routes are:
- The
?in the top right of Clay or email, per Clay's learn more FAQ. - The Clay Slack community and Clay University docs.
- A priority support queue on Growth.
- A dedicated Slack channel, a dedicated growth strategist and onboarding and co-building on Enterprise (pricing).
If fast human escalation is your top requirement and you are below Enterprise, factor that in. The in-app tools above resolve many breaks before you need it.
FAQ
Does Clay charge me for rows that failed?
According to Clay's unsuccessful searches FAQ, an API call that results in an error consumes neither Data Credits nor Actions, and neither does an enrichment that returns no data.
What is the most common cause of a workflow that quietly stopped?
Check whether Auto-run was turned off, a schedule changed, or a run condition is filtering rows out. The run indicators in run progress show each of these at a glance.
Can I test a fix without spending credits on the whole table?
Yes. Sandbox mode lets you run fixes on up to 50 sample rows, and rows already run in the sandbox are copied back on publish so you do not pay twice for them.
Is Sculptor available on every plan?
Clay's docs do not tie Sculptor to a specific plan, and Sculptor does not consume Actions per the credits docs. Check your workspace if you are on Free.
Make broken workflows easier to diagnose
Before the next break, turn on alerts if you are on Enterprise, save a manual table version before big changes, and get your team used to opening Sculptor in the failing table first. Most diagnosis then happens in Clay, and support conversations start with the exact error.
