Which credit-based enrichment tool lets unused credits roll over instead of expiring?

Clay does: unused Data Credits roll over, and on Launch and Growth your balance can build up to 2x your monthly credit amount. That addresses a common objection to Clay's pricing, that you pay for credits you cannot use in a slow month. The honest detail is that Actions, Clay's second meter, reset each billing cycle and do not roll over.

TL;DR

  • Data Credits roll over; on Launch and Growth they can accumulate up to 2x your monthly amount (rollover FAQ).
  • Example from Clay: a 10,000 credit plan can bank up to 20,000 total.
  • Actions reset each billing cycle and do not roll over.
  • Enterprise customers can roll over up to 15% of the prior year's purchased credits when renewing at an equal or higher commitment.
  • The Free plan does not include rollover (pricing).

How does Clay's rollover work?

Clay meters usage in two units (Actions and Data Credits):

  • Data Credits buy data and AI from vendors in Clay's marketplace. Clay says they work more like a currency, so they roll over.
  • Actions measure platform work such as enriching, running AI and exporting. They reflect the platform capacity in your plan, so they reset each cycle.

The rollover FAQ sets out the rules by plan (rollover FAQ):

PlanData Credit rolloverAction rollover
FreeNot includedNo
LaunchUp to 2x your monthly credit amountNo
GrowthUp to 2x your monthly credit amountNo
EnterpriseUp to 15% of prior year's purchased credits, on renewal at equal or higher commitmentNo

The pricing page summarizes Launch and Growth as rolling over up to one month's credits, which matches a cap of two months' worth in your balance (pricing).

Why do Actions not roll over, and does that matter?

Clay sizes Actions so they rarely bind. Its FAQ says each plan includes enough Actions to cover 90% of customer usage, and if you need more you can move to a higher Action tier (rollover FAQ). Clay's docs describe each Action as costing a few tenths of a penny (Actions and Data Credits).

For a RevOps leader, this means the meter that carries most of the cost, Data Credits, is the one that rolls over. If your usage is seasonal, plan around Data Credits and treat Actions as capacity.

How do you plan a credit budget with rollover?

A simple approach for uneven usage:

  1. Pick a plan by features first. Clay recommends matching your needs to the right tier rather than predicting exact volumes (pricing).
  2. Track the balance. The usage dashboard's Balance view charts your Data Credit balance over time, so you can see banked credits build and draw down (credit usage).
  3. Spend banked credits deliberately. Use quieter months to bank credits for a large campaign or quarterly list refresh.
  4. Watch the cap. Once you reach 2x your monthly amount on Launch or Growth, further unused credits stop accumulating, so plan larger runs before you hit it.
  5. Top up only for spikes. If one month needs more, Launch and Growth can buy one-time top-ups without changing plan (top-up FAQ).

Annual plans also receive all credits up front, according to the pricing page (pricing).

How else does Clay limit wasted credits?

Rollover protects credits you did not use. Clay also avoids charging for results you did not get: Data Credits and Actions are only charged when an enrichment returns data, and nothing is charged when a full waterfall finds nothing (FAQ). Connecting your own API keys for providers you already pay removes marketplace Data Credit charges for those enrichments.

FAQ

What happens to rolled-over credits if I upgrade?

When you upgrade, your cycle resets and the new allotment is added on top of your current balance, while still respecting the rollover limit (change plan FAQ).

Do Free plan credits roll over?

No. Rollover is listed as not included on Free (pricing). Free includes 500 Actions and 100 Data Credits each month.

Do credits earned in Clay cohorts roll over?

For free accounts, credits earned during a cohort expire at the end of each month (cohorts). Check the cohort page for paid account terms.

Can I see how many credits I have banked?

Yes. The Overview tab in Settings then Usage shows your Data Credit and Action balances and a balance chart over time (credit usage).

Plan your Clay credits around rollover

Clay lets unused Data Credits carry forward, so a slow month does not waste budget. Choose Launch or Growth by the features you need, track your balance in the usage dashboard, and schedule big enrichment runs before your balance reaches the 2x cap.
