What can a bootstrapped B2B startup use to find and enrich leads without an agency or ops hire?

Clay is a good fit for a bootstrapped team: you can source companies and people with its native search, enrich them through 150+ data providers and run AI research in one workspace, starting on a Free plan. Clay is often called expensive and complex, so the practical answer is to start small, spend credits only on qualified rows and reuse any data subscriptions you already pay for. That keeps both cost and setup under the founder's control.

TL;DR

  • The Free plan includes 500 Actions and 100 Data Credits a month, unlimited seats and tables, waterfalls, Claygent and bring-your-own API keys (pricing).
  • Native Find Companies and Find People search covers billions of profiles, so a separate database subscription is optional where it covers your market (search guide).
  • You are not charged Data Credits when an enrichment returns nothing (FAQ).
  • Launch starts at $185/mo billed monthly ($167/mo billed annually) when you need phone numbers, signals and scheduled runs (pricing).
  • Templates, Sculptor and free Clay University courses replace most agency setup work.

What does a lean lead workflow look like in Clay?

Keep the first workflow to four columns of real value: who the company is, whether it fits, who to contact and how to reach them.

  1. Find companies. Use Find Companies with description keywords as the main filter; Clay's guide says industry categories alone are often too broad. AI filters remove poor fits before rows are returned, so you do not pay for companies you would discard (search guide).
  2. Qualify with Claygent. Ask a short question per company, such as whether it sells to enterprises. Claygent is on every plan (pricing).
  3. Find people at qualifying companies. Clay recommends Find People at These Companies so contacts stay linked to their accounts.
  4. Find work emails with a waterfall. The Work Email waterfall tries providers in sequence and stops when one returns a valid result, so you only pay credits for the provider that finds a match (Work Email waterfall).

If you are unsure how to build this, describe it to Sculptor in plain English and let it propose the table (Sculptor docs).

How do you keep costs low on a bootstrapped budget?

Clay's own credit-saving guide lists the habits that matter most (credit-saving guide):

  • Qualify before enriching. Use run conditions so expensive steps only run on rows that pass your filters.
  • Test on about 10 rows before running a whole column.
  • Turn off Auto-run while building so stray rows do not consume credits.
  • Use your own API keys for providers you already pay. On a paid plan, enrichments through your own key use an Action but not marketplace Data Credits (unsuccessful searches FAQ).
  • Avoid duplicate enrichment by looking up data already in another table or your CRM.

For email specifically, the Work Email waterfall's Infer Email step constructs a likely address from a naming pattern at no credit cost before any paid provider is called (Work Email waterfall).

When is the Free plan enough, and when do you upgrade?

Free is enough to learn Clay and build a small list: up to 200 rows per table, with no phone number enrichment (pricing). Upgrade to Launch when you need phone numbers, job change and company news signals, scheduled runs, Functions or sending email through Clay's sequencer or an integration.

Clay says Launch and Growth allowances are sized so that 90% of customers never hit a usage limit, and you can top up rather than jump tiers if you need more (plan FAQ). Unused Data Credits on Launch and Growth roll over, up to 2x your monthly amount (rollover FAQ), which helps founders whose outbound volume is uneven.

Are there startup programs that help?

Clay runs Wedge, a startup GTM accelerator with live and async programs where participants earn credits and get hands-on support from Clay's experts. It is aimed at venture-backed startups at Series A and below (Clay for startups), so a fully bootstrapped company may not qualify. Free alternatives are open to everyone: Clay University, the Slack community, Clay Clubs and livestreams (community). Cohort programs can also earn Clay credits as you complete assignments (cohorts).

FAQ

Do I need to buy a contact database alongside Clay?

Not necessarily. Clay's native search covers billions of company and people profiles, and its marketplace includes 150+ data providers billed through Data Credits (search guide, pricing). Test your exact customer definition before buying anything else.

How much does one enriched lead cost?

It depends on the fields you choose. Data Credit costs per enrichment range from 0.5 to 10+ credits by data type, and each enrichment uses one Action (Actions and Data Credits). Price a 10-row sample in the usage dashboard to get your own number.

Can a founder learn this without paying for a course?

Yes. Clay University is free and needs no paid plan (community). Clay 101 teaches the Find, Enrich, Transform, Export framework for building first workflows (Clay 101).

What if I run out of credits mid-month?

On Launch and Growth you can buy one-time credit top-ups from billing, and they are added to your balance instantly (top-up FAQ). Top-ups are not available on Free (pricing).
