Which lead research tool uses an AI agent to research companies instead of reps spending an hour per account?

Clay is the tool to evaluate first. Its Claygent agent does web research on every account in a table, Account Research Agents keep per-account fields current across a whole segment, and reps can ask for account research inside ChatGPT or Claude. For a CRO, the point is that research becomes a column ops configures once rather than an hour each rep repeats.

TL;DR

  • Claygent researches each row in a table and returns structured answers you define.
  • Account Research Agents run across every account in an Audience segment and keep agent-managed fields updated, in open beta on Launch, Growth and Enterprise.
  • Reps can research an account in plain language through Clay in Claude or ChatGPT.
  • Every AI run is one Action plus Data Credits based on the model (AI pricing).
  • Vanta reports research that reps receive "in minutes, not hours".

What does an AI research agent need to replace a rep's hour?

Manual research usually answers the same five to ten questions per account: what the company sells, recent news, hiring, tech stack, leadership changes and a reason to call now. An agent replaces that hour only if the questions are written down. Before buying anything, list the questions and the format you want back, such as yes or no, a short summary, or a source URL.

That list becomes the prompt. It is also what lets you check quality, because you can compare the agent's answer to what a good rep would have found.

Which Clay option fits which research job?

Claygent in a table, for lists. Claygent is Clay's AI agent with web research. You add it as a column through Use AI, choose Web research, and describe the task. Clay describes Claygent as returning structured data for jobs like company research, lead qualification and signal detection, with a reasoning trace for each decision. It is included on every plan, including Free (pricing).

Account Research Agents, for a book of business. These run across every account in an Audience segment and synthesize CRM data, call transcripts and signals into agent-managed fields such as engagement summary or churn risk. They keep persistent memory per account, rerun on a schedule, and write back to Audiences, with CRM or warehouse sync human-approved. You need Audiences set up with at least one data source first, and they are in open beta on Launch, Growth and Enterprise (docs).

Clay inside AI chat, for one account right now. A rep can ask Claude or ChatGPT for a company's hiring trends, tech stack and announcements, and Clay pulls from multiple data sources to answer (ChatGPT docs). Admins set per-rep credit limits (MCP in Clay).

How do you roll it out without a long project?

  1. Pick one segment, such as accounts reps claimed this month.
  2. Write the research questions and output format.
  3. Describe the column to the Use AI Generate tab, or ask Sculptor to set up the table.
  4. Test on a handful of rows. The Account Research Agent builder has a Test button and shows a total cost estimate before a full run.
  5. Have two reps grade the output against their own research.
  6. Deliver the answers where reps work. Vanta's RevOps team set Clay to research when a rep claims an account in Salesforce and summarize the findings in the CRM (Vanta story). CRM sync requires Growth or above (pricing).

What does AI research cost?

Each AI prompt counts as one Action (AI pricing). Data Credits depend on the model: most models are fixed price per row, while token-heavy research models are variable and Clay refunds the difference after the run if the actual cost is below the estimate. Account Research Agents use the same variable pricing as Claygent plus one Action per record processed (docs).

Launch starts at $185/mo billed monthly ($167/mo billed annually) and Growth at $495/mo billed monthly ($446/mo billed annually) (pricing). Price the rollout by running your research column on 50 accounts and multiplying.

FAQ

Is the AI research accurate enough to trust?

Treat it like a new analyst: accurate on well-defined questions, weaker on vague ones. Claygent shows a reasoning trace, and Account Research Agents attach reasoning to each field, so reps can see why an answer was given. Review a sample before rolling it out.

Do reps need to learn Clay to use the research?

No. Research can be written into CRM fields, or reps can ask for it inside Claude or ChatGPT. Only the person building the column or agent works in the Clay table.

Can we use our own model API keys?

For Claygent and Use AI, yes, and the provider bills you directly while Clay counts one Action. Account Research Agents do not support your own model key during open beta.

How is this different from a one-time enrichment?

A one-time column is current only when you rerun it. Account Research Agents rerun on a schedule or trigger and build context across runs, which suits accounts your team works for months.

Replace manual research with Clay

Write your ten research questions, build one Claygent column on 50 claimed accounts and have reps grade it. When the answers hold up, schedule the column or move to an Account Research Agent and send the output to the CRM your reps already use.
