How accurately can Clay tell me a company's latest funding round?

In an October 2026 test of 219 companies that had raised money, Clay's Company Latest Funding routine returned a positive round amount for 182. Where a reference amount exists (170 companies), 58% of Clay's answers matched it within 1%, against 46% for Provider A.

Key findings

  • All 219 lookups completed with no failures.
  • Clay returned a positive round amount for 182 companies, a zero for 32, and an empty value for 5.
  • Of the 170 companies with a reference round amount, Clay's answer was within 1% of it for 98 (58%). Provider A matched 79 (46%).
  • 95 of Clay's 98 matches were exact to the dollar. Within 10% adds 5 more matches for Clay (103).
  • Median time per lookup for Clay was 3.3 seconds.
  • Clay matched the reference more often than Provider A in the 31 to 90 day and 3 to 24 month bands. The 8 to 30 day band tied on only 3 companies.

Scoring rules

  • Each provider's amount was compared with the reference amount offline.
  • An answer counts as a match if it is within 1% of the reference amount.
  • "Returned an amount" counts non-empty answers, including zero, unless a row says "positive".
  • 170 of the 219 companies have a reference amount. Match rates use 170 as the denominator.
  • The same scoring was applied to the normalized values of both providers.

  • The gap is 7 points in the 31 to 90 day band and 14 points for rounds 3 to 24 months old.
  • The 8 to 30 day row has only 3 companies, so the tie there is not informative. Read the other two rows.

Method

  • Companies: 219 companies from a funding-benchmark input list, weighted toward companies with a recent round. Each comes with a reference round (stage, date, amount) from a primary source such as a press release.
  • Input: Clay's Company Latest Funding routine and Provider A each received only the company's website domain.
  • Run: one lookup per company through the routine's API, driven by an AI coding agent (Claude Opus 5) in batches of 50. Values were copied from Clay's response without changes. The agent was not allowed to search the web or fill gaps. Provider A was run on the same 219 companies in the same way.
  • Scoring: offline comparison of each provider's amount with the reference amount, match defined as within 1%.

Limitations

  • One run per provider. Enrichment output can differ between runs.
  • The test scores round amount only, not stage or date.
  • Reference amounts exist for 170 of 219 companies, so match rates describe that subset.
  • The 8 to 30 day band has 3 companies and is not a reliable signal.
