Clay AI agent benchmark: enriching SMB and startup company data
Clay got startup and SMB company records right about 19 times out of 20. The best AI agent got HQ country, headcount and website right 96% of the time, for about 3 Clay credits per company, and two runs got every company right.

How accurate is Clay on startup and SMB companies?
We asked seven AI coding agents to enrich a list of venture-backed software companies with Clay alone: website, HQ country, employee range and latest funding round. Just under half of the list were startups and SMBs with 11 to 200 employees. Clay had the right HQ, headcount and website for every one of them.
| Field | Best agent | Best single run | Companies Clay covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| HQ country | 96% | 100% | All |
| Employee range | 96% | 100% | All |
| Website | 96% | 100% | All |
| Latest funding round and year | 85% | 92% | 94% |
The best agent was Codex with GPT-6 Sol for HQ, headcount and website, and Claude Code with Opus 5.5 for funding. When an agent filled in a startup's funding round, it was right 87% of the time.
What does a startup record cost in Clay credits?
About 3 Clay credits per company for the full record: website, HQ, headcount and funding. Clay credits are measured as the change in the Clay workspace credit balance. The best run finished the whole list in about 7 minutes.
Clay prices vendor data in Data Credits, and if an enrichment returns no result you are not charged; current plans are on Clay pricing.
How the agent got there with Clay
The top runs used the same short sequence of saved Clay routines:
- Confirm the company. Look up the domain, and check any doubtful name in Clay's company search, so a startup isn't confused with an older business of the same name.
- Enrich the company. Clay's Enrich Company returns HQ and headcount in one call.
- Read funding from company news. Clay's Company News returns each round with its date; the best agents wrote a round only with its year.
- Leave a blank rather than guess. When Clay had no confident value, the cell stayed empty, which is Clay's own guidance.
Clay works across segments
The same Clay setup, with no changes, handled very different lists. Mid-market companies came back fully correct on HQ, headcount and website in every run from the best agent. Companies headquartered outside the US got the right HQ country 97% of the time. On people data, the same setup found the CMO at consumer and retail brands and verified work emails for US contacts with over 85% accuracy.

How we tested
Seven AI coding agents ran the task three times each: Claude Code with Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5, Codex with GPT-6 Sol, Pi with GPT-5.6 Luna, Grok CLI with Grok 4.6, OpenCode with Kimi K3 and Factory with Kimi K3. Agents ran one at a time, each in a fresh sandbox with the same Clay key, the same 19 saved Clay routines and a 60-minute limit. Runs interrupted by a platform error were rerun. HQ and website must match exactly, headcount counts within one LinkedIn band, and funding needs both the round letter and the year. Size bands come from each company's LinkedIn page.
This segment covers just under half of a 100-company list, so treat single-run figures as a guide.

Try it yourself
Install the Clay Agent Plugin or give your agent a Clay API key and the Clay Public API docs. Then add three lines to your prompt: confirm each company in Clay's company search before enriching it, take funding rounds from Clay's company news and write each round with its year, and leave a cell blank when Clay has no value. The Clay Agent Plugin ships Clay's skills to your agent up front, including the habits that keep credit use down; setup is one prompt (about 15 minutes), and there is no additional cost to use it.
