Clay AI agent benchmark: enriching mid-market company data
With Clay, Codex with GPT-6 Sol got the HQ country, headcount band and website right for every one of 43 mid-market companies (201 to 1,000 employees) in all three of its runs: 129 of 129 checks on each field. Its first two runs did it for about 3.3 to 3.4 Clay credits per company.

How accurate is Clay on mid-market companies?
We asked seven AI coding agents to enrich 100 venture-backed software companies with Clay alone. 43 of them have 201 to 1,000 employees. On those companies, Clay gave the top agents a perfect record, and every one of the 43 got a correct HQ, headcount and website from at least one run.
| Field | Best agent (accuracy) | Best single run | All agents, pooled | Companies answered right by at least one run |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HQ country | Codex 100% (129/129) | 100% (43/43) | 94.5% | 43/43 |
| Employee range | Codex 100% (129/129) | 100% (43/43) | 94.2% | 43/43 |
| Website domain | Codex 100% (129/129) | 100% (43/43) | 91.9% | 43/43 |
Best agent is pooled over that agent's three runs. Six runs scored 43 of 43 on all three fields: all three of Codex's, Claude Code with Opus 5.5's first, Factory with Kimi K3's first and Claude Code with Sonnet 5's third. Opus scored 97.7% (126/129) on each field across its three runs.
The upper half of the band was the strongest. For the 20 companies with 501 to 1,000 employees, HQ country and headcount were each right 97.0% of the time pooled across all seven agents.
What does a mid-market record cost in Clay credits?
Codex's first run spent 333 Clay credits for the whole list of 100 companies, about 3.3 per company, and its second spent 341, about 3.4. Clay credits are measured as the change in the Clay workspace credit balance, and those totals cover every field the task asked for. Its third run also sent every company to the Latest Funding routine, which added credits without improving results on these fields.
Speed came with the accuracy. Codex's three runs took 7.2, 9.3 and 12.2 minutes for 100 companies. Clay does not charge Data Credits or Actions when an enrichment returns no result; see Clay pricing.
How the agent got there with Clay
Codex used the same saved Clay routines in every run:
- Find the domain. Its first run sent 101 companies to Company Domain.
- Confirm the match. In its first run, for doubtful names, it searched Clay's companies by description with the industry set to Software Development, so each name resolved to the software company rather than an older business that shares it.
- Enrich the company. It sent 104 rows to Enrich Company, which returned HQ and headcount.
- Keep it in Clay. Every value came from Clay's own data, which keeps each field traceable to a Clay record.
The confirmation step is a single line in a prompt. Codex checked the candidates in every run, and its three runs gave the same perfect result.
Clay works across segments
Mid-market companies were not a special case. The same Clay setup, with the same prompt and 19 saved routines, gave Codex 96.5% on HQ, headcount and website for startups with 11 to 200 employees, and 72 of 72 on each field for companies headquartered outside the US. For recently funded companies, employee ranges were right 97.4% of the time pooled across every agent. On people data, the same Clay workspace let agents confirm 91.9% of CFOs who stayed in their role.

How we tested
Seven AI coding agents ran the task three times each: Claude Code with Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5, Codex with GPT-6 Sol, Pi with GPT-5.6 Luna, Grok CLI with Grok 4.6, OpenCode with Kimi K3 and Factory with Kimi K3. Agents ran one at a time, each in a fresh sandbox with the same Clay key, the same 19 saved Clay routines and a 60-minute limit. Runs interrupted by a platform error were rerun. Segment numbers cover the 20 completed runs of the task; OpenCode Kimi has two. HQ and website must match exactly, and headcount counts within one LinkedIn band. Size bands come from each company's LinkedIn page.
This segment has 43 companies, so one company moves a single run's score by about 2 points.

Try it yourself
Install the Clay Agent Plugin or give your agent a Clay API key and the Clay Public API docs. Give it your account list and two lines of instruction: confirm each company in Clay's company search by industry, size and country before enriching it, and leave a cell blank when Clay has no value. The Clay Agent Plugin ships Clay's skills to your agent up front, including the habits that keep credit use down; setup is one prompt (about 15 minutes), and there is no additional cost to use it.
