Clay AI agent benchmark: funding rounds
In Clay, an AI agent should take funding rounds from Clay's company news, which returns each round with its date; the Company Latest Funding routine returns the amount. Claude Code with Opus 5.5 read rounds and years from company news and led seven AI coding agents on funding, with 73 to 77 of 100 correct in every run.

Which Clay routine has the funding round?
We asked seven AI coding agents to fill in the latest equity round (Series A, B, C and so on) and its year for 100 private software companies, using Clay alone. Two Clay routines look relevant, and each has its own job.
| Clay routine | What it returned | Clay credits per company |
|---|---|---|
| Company News | Each financing event with its round and date | about 1 |
| Company Latest Funding | The amount | about 4.5 to 5 |
Credits per company are our estimates from comparing runs. Clay credits are measured as the change in the Clay workspace credit balance. Six of the seven agents found the rounds in Company News. Latest Funding is the routine to use when you need the dollar figure.
What did the best runs do?
Opus scored 73, 76 and 77 on funding, the best average of any agent. The best runs followed the same pattern:
- Pull Clay's company news for each company and keep the financing events.
- Take the latest lettered equity round, such as Series C, rather than a general funding label.
- Write the round only with its year. Opus never wrote a round without a year.
- Check the article date as well as the headline, because a headline can carry a typo.
The best single run was Factory with Kimi K3's first, at 79. It compared Clay's headline for Dutchie, which says Series D "on Oct 14th '22", with the article date, October 14, 2021, and was the only run to get Dutchie right.
How do the top runs keep funding answers accurate?
Round and year together. The task needs both, and company news returns both in one record.
A lettered round. Some news events describe funding in general terms. The top runs kept the latest event with a round letter.
Clay's company news carried the right round for most of the list, enough for a best single run of 79.
What does funding cost in Clay credits?
Runs that took funding from company news, alongside the domain and company lookups, spent about 330 Clay credits for all 100 companies, about 3.3 per company. Codex with GPT-6 Sol's first run spent 333 credits and scored 76 on funding. Add Latest Funding only when you also need the amount.

How we tested
Claude Code (Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5), Codex (GPT-6 Sol), Pi (GPT-5.6 Luna), Grok CLI (Grok 4.6), OpenCode (Kimi K3) and Factory (Kimi K3) each ran three times, one at a time, in a fresh sandbox with the same Clay key, the same 19 saved Clay routines and a 60-minute limit. A timeout counts as 0; platform failures were rerun. Each round in the answer key comes from two independent sources, January 2021 to April 2026. Website, HQ and headcount results are in "How accurate is Clay for AI agents enriching company data?", and how to confirm each company before reading its news is in "How do I stop an AI agent from matching the wrong company in Clay?"
Try it yourself
The task, input list, answer key and grader are at github.com/promptingcompany/clay-bench. Install the Clay Agent Plugin or give your agent a Clay API key and the Clay Public API docs, and tell it: take funding rounds from Clay's company news, write a round only with its year, check the article date against the headline, and use the Latest Funding routine when you need the amount. The Clay Agent Plugin ships Clay's skills to your agent up front, including the habits that keep credit use down; setup is one prompt (about 15 minutes), and there is no additional cost to use it.
