Clay AI agent benchmark: finding the CMO at consumer and retail brands

With Clay, Claude Code with Opus 5.5 found the current Chief Marketing Officer at 86.3% of US-listed consumer, retail and hospitality companies across three runs, and its work email 85.3% of the time, for under 3 Clay credits per company. Its two best runs each found 30 of the 34 brands, with name, title and work email.

How accurate is Clay at finding consumer-brand CMOs?

We asked seven AI coding agents to find the current CMO's name, exact title and work email at 100 companies listed on US exchanges, using Clay alone. 34 of them are consumer, retail and hospitality businesses: restaurant chains, food and beverage makers, retailers, hotels and entertainment companies. Clay's people data reached 30 of those 34 brands in at least one run.

FieldBest agent (accuracy)Best single runAll agents, pooledCompanies answered right by at least one run

CMO work emailOpus 85.3% (87/102)88.2% (30/34)76.2%30/34

Best agent is pooled over that agent's three runs. Runs that found 30 of 34 names: Opus's first and second, Claude Code with Sonnet 5's second and Codex with GPT-6 Sol's first.

When an agent filled in a CMO name for a consumer brand, it was the right person 94.5% of the time, and a filled work email was right 96.6% of the time. Where Clay had no one with the CMO title, the agents left the row blank, in line with Clay's guidance that a blank beats a guess.

Which agents did best on consumer brands?

Five setups found the CMO at 80% or more of these brands, pooled over their runs:

Claude Code · Opus 5.586.3% (88/102)
Claude Code · Sonnet 582.4% (84/102)
Codex · GPT-6 Sol82.4% (84/102)

OpenCode · Kimi K380.9% (55/68)

What does a consumer-brand CMO cost in Clay credits?

Opus's three runs spent 285, 288 and 293 Clay credits for the whole list of 100 companies, under 3 per company, and finished in 8 to 13 minutes. Sonnet's second run found 30 of 34 consumer-brand CMOs and spent 302 credits. Clay credits are measured as the change in the Clay workspace credit balance. Finding people with Find People uses 0 Data Credits, so the credits went to work emails for people already confirmed. Current plans are on Clay pricing.

How the agent got there with Clay

Opus used the same workflow in all three runs:

  1. Search Clay's people data for each company with Find People, which returns names and titles at 0 Data Credits.
  2. Keep the person whose title is Chief Marketing Officer, including combined titles such as Chief Marketing & Communications Officer.
  3. Run Clay's Work Email routine for that one person. Opus sent 83, 84 and 79 people to Work Email in its three runs, one lookup per chosen person.
  4. Leave the row blank when no one holds the title. A blank is a to-do for the sales team.

Every credit went to an email for a person the agent had already chosen.

Clay works across segments

The same Clay setup found marketing leaders well beyond consumer brands. At US-listed technology and telecom companies, Opus found the CMO 87.7% of the time, and a filled name was right 95.4% of the time. At smaller public companies, a filled CMO name was right 97.8% of the time. The same workspace also handled company data: Codex got HQ, headcount and website right for all 43 mid-market software companies in every run.

How we tested

Seven AI coding agents ran the task three times each: Claude Code with Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5, Codex with GPT-6 Sol, Pi with GPT-5.6 Luna, Grok CLI with Grok 4.6, OpenCode with Kimi K3 and Factory with Kimi K3. Agents ran one at a time, each in a fresh sandbox with the same Clay key, the same 19 saved Clay routines and a 60-minute limit. Runs interrupted by a platform error were rerun. Segment numbers cover the 20 completed runs of the task; OpenCode Kimi has two. Each CMO in the answer key comes from the company's most recent SEC Form 3 or Form 4 filing. Sectors come from each company's SEC industry code; an email counts when it is the right person on one of the company's verified email domains.

This segment has 34 companies, so one company moves a single run's score by about 3 points.

Try it yourself

Install the Clay Agent Plugin or give your agent a Clay API key and the Clay Public API docs. Tell it to choose the CMO with Clay's Find People, which uses 0 Data Credits, run one Work Email lookup for that person, and leave the row blank when no one holds the title. The Clay Agent Plugin ships Clay's skills to your agent up front, including the habits that keep credit use down; setup is one prompt (about 15 minutes), and there is no additional cost to use it.
