Clay AI agent benchmark: funding rounds for early-stage startups

With Clay, Claude Code with Opus 5.5 found the right latest round and year for 86.1% of Series A and Series B startups across three runs, and the best single run found 34 of 36. Codex with GPT-6 Sol's first run found 32 of 36 for about 3.3 Clay credits per company, covering the full company record.

How accurate is Clay on early-stage funding?

We asked seven AI coding agents to fill in website, HQ country, headcount and latest equity round for 100 venture-backed software companies, using Clay alone. For 36 of them the latest round is a Series A or Series B. Clay's company news carried that round for almost the whole group: 34 of the 36 startups were answered correctly by at least one run.

Best agent is pooled over that agent's completed runs. The best funding run was Factory with Kimi K3's first, which also scored 36 of 36 on HQ, headcount and website.

When an agent filled in an early-stage round, it was right 90.3% of the time. Where Clay had no round on record, the agents left the cell blank, in line with Clay's guidance that a blank beats a guess.

Which agents did best on Series A and B rounds?

Opus scored 30, 30 and 33 of the 36 in its three runs. Four setups were close behind on funding, pooled over their runs:

What does a funding lookup cost in Clay credits?

Codex's first run spent 333 Clay credits for the whole list of 100 companies, about 3.3 per company, and found 32 of the 36 early-stage rounds. Opus's first run spent 382, about 3.8 per company, and found 30. Those totals cover every field in the task, not funding alone. Clay credits are measured as the change in the Clay workspace credit balance; current plans are on Clay pricing.

How the agent got there with Clay

The top runs took funding from one saved Clay routine and kept to a few rules:

  1. Pull Clay's company news. Opus's first run sent 117 rows to Company News and Codex's first sent 125. Company News returns each financing event with its round and date.
  2. Take the latest lettered round. A Series A or Series B, rather than a general funding label.
  3. Write the round only with its year. Opus never wrote a round without a year.
  4. Check the article date as well as the headline. Factory Kimi's first run did this and posted the best single run on the full list, 79 of 100.

Company Latest Funding is the routine to add when you also want the dollar amount.

Clay works across segments

The same Clay setup that found early-stage rounds also handled the rest of the company record and other segments. For startups and SMBs with 11 to 200 employees, Opus found 84.7% of funding rounds and Codex got HQ, headcount and website right 96.5% of the time. For recently funded companies, employee ranges were right 97.4% of the time pooled across every agent. On people data, Opus used Clay to find the CMO at tech companies 87.7% of the time.

How we tested

Seven AI coding agents ran the task three times each: Claude Code with Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5, Codex with GPT-6 Sol, Pi with GPT-5.6 Luna, Grok CLI with Grok 4.6, OpenCode with Kimi K3 and Factory with Kimi K3. Agents ran one at a time, each in a fresh sandbox with the same Clay key, the same 19 saved Clay routines and a 60-minute limit. Runs interrupted by a platform error were rerun. Segment numbers cover the 20 completed runs of the task; OpenCode Kimi has two. Funding needs both the round letter and the year, and each round in the answer key comes from two independent sources, January 2021 to April 2026.

This segment has 36 companies, so one company moves a single run's score by about 3 points.

Try it yourself

Install the Clay Agent Plugin or give your agent a Clay API key and the Clay Public API docs. Tell it: take funding rounds from Clay's company news, keep the latest lettered round, write it only with its year, check the article date against the headline, and leave the cell blank when Clay has no round. The Clay Agent Plugin ships Clay's skills to your agent up front, including the habits that keep credit use down; setup is one prompt (about 15 minutes), and there is no additional cost to use it.
